A/ Overview - Why to visit?

Pics: Vietnamguidebook, Dipr.com.vn, Ba Na resort, Danang city portal, Tuoi Tre newspaper, Thanh Nien newspaper and Araovat.com

Da Nang, the capital city of Central Vietnam, is situated in the middle of the three world cultural heritage sites including the ancient citadel Hue, the ancient town Hoi An and the holy sanctuary My Son. Because Hoi An, Hue and My Son are quite near Da Nang, most of tourists tend to head straight to these must-see places and quit Da Nang city.

So what really draws tourists to Da Nang city?
First of all, Da Nang has a long coastline, stretching from the foot of Hai Van pass to Marble mountain with many charming beaches such as My Khe, Non Nuoc, My An...

Second: Son Tra peninsula,  a low mountainous area mostly covered by green forest surrounded by long beautiful sandy beaches.

Third: A motorbike ride on Hai Van pass where great mountain, green forest, blue ocean, white clouds are just around you. It will lead you to Lang Co bay, a member of the world beautiful bays

Fourth: Where you can hide away the hot weather of Central Vietnam in summer that even the Vietnamese have to call "God". Thats Ba Na mountain near Da Nang city. Ba Na is called the Da Lat of Da Nang city with cool climate around the year. (But the room rate of Ba Na resort is not for a budget traveller! Ah ha!)

Fifth: You love fireworks? Da Nang host the yearly international fireworks competition (often take place on 29th and 30th April)
You love paramotor? In May 2012, Da Nang also hosted the Da Nang international paramotor race.

 History
In the middle of the 16th century, when Hoi An was a busy center of the south, Da Nang was only a small port for goods in transit and ship repair. It gradually developed into a commercial port replacing Hoi An in the early 18th century, when European shipbuilding was improved and large deep draught vessels could easily enter Danang bay.

In 1835, after King Minh Mang ordered: “European vessels are not allowed to anchor to do trade at any harbours except for Han Port”, Da Nang became the largest commercial port in the central region. The local small-scale industries, including shipbuilding, preliminary processing of agricultural, forestry and fishery products, and trade, services prospered accordingly.

The French colonists, after establishing their domination of the whole of Vietnam in 1889, separated Da Nang from Quang Nam province and renamed the city Tourane and under the control of the Governor General of Indochina.

In the early 20th century, Tourane was developed on a European model, which focused on social infrastructure and manufacture technology. Many kinds of economic activity took shape and thrived, such as agricultural production, small-scale industries, export product procesing (tea, food, beverages, ice, alcohol, fish sauce, dried fish), ship building and repair, and services. Together with Hai Phong and Sai Gon, Tourane became an important trading center of the country.

In 1950, French gave the authority over the city to the Bao Dai government. In March 1965, American marine units landed and started to set up a big military complex. The city was defined as a centrally governed city in 1967, and accordingly American troops and the Saigon government built up Da Nang into a political, military and cultural center of the 1st and 2nd tactical zones. Military bases and such infrastructure as the airport, ports, warehouses, roads, public works, communication stations, and banks were constructed. Industries flourished, resulting in the substitution by industrial zones of handicraft workshops. For example, Hoa Khanh Industrial Zone was used for oxygen, acetylene and detergent production, grind and textiles industries. However, the devastating war made thousands of rural people flee in refugee camps. Urban slums appeared, social evils increased and production came to a standstill.

In 1975, after gaining complete independence, Da Nang (temporarily under Quang Nam – Da Nang province) began to overcome the war’s severe consequences. Regardless of difficulties, the city’s rehabilitation and development had some results, especially after the renovation in 1986.

On 6 July 1996, the tenth session of the 9th National Assembly of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam passed a Resolution separating Quang Nam – Da Nang province into Quang Nam Province and DaNang city, which was directly responsible to the central government. The new city of Da Nang consisted of the previous Da Nang, Hoa Vang rural district and Hoang Sa island district.

 Geographic location
Da Nang lies between latitudes 15055’ and 16014’N and longitudes 107018’ and 108020’E.  It is in the central of Vietnam, 759km from Hanoi and 960km from Saigon.

Conveniently, Da Nang lies on the National Road 1A, rail, sea and air routes. It borders Thua Thien-Hue province in the North, Quang Nam province in the South and the West, and the East Sea in the East.
In addition, Da Nang is located on the World Heritage Road along the coastline of Central Vietnam. From Da Nang, traveling along National Road 1A, visitors can easily and conveniently access to the four of five UNESCO Heritage Sites in Vietnam: Phong Nha-Ke Bang national park, Hue imperial city, Hoi An ancient town, and My Son holly land.

On regional and international scale, Da Nang is considered one of the important gateways to the East sea of the Central Highlands of Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia via the East-West Economic Corridor.

Topography
Da Nang’s topography is a combination of mountains and coastal plains, with high sloping mountains dominating the north and northwest. There are some ranges running into the East sea.

B/Highlights
* Son Tra peninsula
Overview
Son Tra peninsula is a low mountainous area mostly covered by forest . It is considered the green lung of Da Nang city. Son Tra peninsula and the Hai Van pass embrace the Han river and form a wide bay. From the air, the Son Tra peninsula looks like a fish fairy swimming to the East sea. From the sea, you can see three mountain peaks: Co Ngua, Nghe and Mo Dieu. The highest peak is 693m above the sea level.

Stretching a total area of 4,000 hectares, Son Tra is home to around 1,000 different plant species, 51 species of birds, 15 species of reptiles, and 42 species of coral. Red cheek gibbons and a species of turtle are among the animals living in the area that are also listed in Vietnam’s Red Book of endangered species.

The peninsula has been named a national park to help protect the delicate balance of life in the area.

Surrounded by the sea, the peninsula has an extensive array of beaches like Bai Bac, Bai Nam and Bai But – heaven for those seeking water activities like swimming, fishing and sightseeing by boat. One can also take a dive to explore extraordinary coral reefs. With its strong winds and large waves, Bai Bac beach is perfect for surfers. Bai But and Bai Nam are more gentle and safe for scuba diving.
For tens of thousands of years, the peninsula was an island. However, alluvial soil deposited by rivers connected it with the mainland. In the early nineteenth century, the Nguyen Dynasty built many defensive fortresses and observation posts here. In 1858, the French fired the first shot on the peninsula and started their invasion of Vietnam.

Nowadays, the peninsula’s tourism potentials have been aroused. Some resorts, including Son Tra Mercure resort managed by Accor, have been built along the beaches.

While most of the beaches near the city are usually crowded, Son Tra beaches still remains the beauty of quietness.

Motorbike to Son Tra
Getting bored with the city center's flatness, I took a motorbike to Son Tra peninsula in the hot afternoon of middle June 2012.

(Note: I came to Son Tra right after the small storm attacked the Central Vietnam. Therefore the seawater of Son Tra  should be clearer and more blue than the pics I took)

Left the city center, the bike climbed up to the top of Thuan Phuoc brigde where I had a great Da Nang city view

Then I stopped at a fishing village full of "basket boats"

The cool winds with green trees. The mountain on the left and the East sea on the right... The bike moved up and down freely along zigzag road

There on the mountain was Linh Ung pagoda with statue of 67-m high Boddhisattva

And the view of a long sandy beach

Totally forgot the so hot summer afternoon when I walked on the beautiful beach occupied by Son Tra resort. Just wished to stay in this resort for one night but I had to leave after 30 minutes. Hue ancient citadel was waiting for my visit...

* Hai Van pass to Lang Co beach and Hai Van tunnel
Hai Van pass to Lang Co beach
"Hai" means "Sea" and "Van" is "Cloud". The Sea Cloud pass stretches from Truong Son northern mountain range to the East sea creating a natural border between Da Nang city and Thua Thien Hue province.

To the East of the pass is great ocean with beautiful and deserted shoreline. To the West is great mountain with bold green forest. From 496m high level of the pass looking down is the 3,200m long curving railway going around the peninsula and getting through seven tunnels. And hanging in the middle is the winding road with many "elbow" turns running into the deeply blue sky... There are just only motorbikes and very few trucks climbing up and down the pass. You are free to be on the road as an adventurer, except sometimes you have to stop the motorbikes as many mountain goats suddenly appearing and occupying the way.

At the northernmost part of the pass, you will have a great beautiful overview of Lang Co bay, a member of the world beautiful bays (Lang Co bay belongs to Thua Thien Hue province but its easy and nearer to access from Da Nang city)

Attention: There are some small waterfalls on the pass where sometimes a few men taking nude bath.

Hai Van tunnel
On 5th June 2005, the Hai Van tunnel which links Da Nang city and Thua Thien Hue province was opened. This 6280m long, 11.9m wide and 7.5m high tunnel has helped to reduce traffic accidents, save fuel and time (1 hour) as well as increase transportation efficiency. Maximum speed in the tunnel is 60km/hour and minimum is 30km/hour.
Since the opening of the tunnel, most vehicles, including all open tour buses, have chosen this route ( Motorbikes, bicycles and all hevicles carrying flammable materials are not permitted in the tunnel). But If you are like me, a motorbike ride to the top of Hai van pass is a must to do as it gives the beautiful views of ocean, mountain and forest...

* My Khe beach
Local Da Nang people call My Khe the most beautiful beach of the city.
The Australian magazine, Sunday Herald Sun, ranked the 900m long My Khe beach in the top 10 Asian beaches, saying that Australia is endowed with so many beaches but they can’t forget the first impression of My Khe with its  crystal-clear blue water and long sandy beach.
And the  American business magazine Forbes also voted My Khe as one of the six most attractive beaches on the planet .

For me, My Khe is a beautiful long sandy beach with blue water and fresh atmosphere. I especially love the coconut trees running along the road beside the beach. The beach is free of roaming vendors.
There are many hotel, resorts along the beachfront

My Khe beach is located about six kilometers East of Da Nang. A motorbike ride from Da Nang city center to the beach costs about 30,000VND

Where to stay in My Khe beach
Most of the hotels listed below are located on Truong Sa street and Nguyen Van Thoai street, along My Khe beach. Room rate starts at 30USD up

* Ba Na mountain

                                                                       Pic: araovat.com

Why Ba Na?
*Dalat of Da Nang city
Look for a place to hide away the heat of Central Vietnam in summer? Come to Ba Na mountain which is just about 40km from Da Nang city.
When the temperature in Hoi An ancient town, Hue ancient citadel and the Da Nang city climb up to 37oC, its just about 17oC to 25oC on Ba Na mountain.

Well known as Dalat of Da Nang cityBa Na mountain is 1487m above sea level. In Ba Na, there are four seasons in a day: spring in the morning, summer at noon, autumn in the afternoon and winter in the evening. Average temperature around the year is just from 17 to 20 degree Celsius

* The Ba Na natural reservation zone has 544 sorts of high-level flora, 256 types of animals, in which there are 6 flora and 44 fauna of being precious recorded in Vietnamese Redbook. (Source: Danang city portal)

* Hanging in the fog and clouds:
Ba Na telpher system has a length of 5042.62m and a height difference of 1,291.81m between its upper and lower stations - setting the world record for the longest and highest non-stop cable car

The cable car system is built up to European standards with Austrian technology

It takes about 17 minutes to ride up Ba Na Mountain on the cable car, compared with 55 minutes by car along a narrow, winding road.

Sitting in the cable car up to the top of Ba Na mountain, you sometimes feel that you are hanging in the fog and clouds. Looking down and around is thick green forest with shimmering waterfalls far away...

At the last station, visitors can see one of the largest sitting Buddha statue in Asia, which is 27m high, in the Linh Ung pagoda.

* In connection with Ba Na mountain, Mo river is a famous tourist site. In direction of southwest about 27 kilometers from Danang, in Hoa Vang district, the site is most occupied in summer. There is Toc Tien waterfall (Fairy’s Hair Fall) with 9 levels. The waterfall is called Toc Tien because looking up from the fall foot, it looks like a fairy’s beautiful hair.

  Pics: Ba Na mountain resort

Ba Na hill station resort over one hundred years ago
In 1894, governor general of  Indochina, Doumer, decided to build a hill station for French civil employees and military officers. A group of officers led by marine captain Debay and his colleagues, including lieutenants Baulmont, Duhamel and Vairel was assigned to carry out the plan. After many years of surveying various landscapes in central Vietnam, they failed to find a suitable place. In December 1900, Doumer organized a second mission led by Debay and three lieutenants, Becker, Decherl and Venel. In 1901, the mission discovered Mt. Ba Na in the East of the Truong Son mountain range and found it to be ideal for the construction of a high standard resort.
In 1919, the mission employed the local people to build a main road to the mountain peak and wooden bridges across the streams. One of them, the Debay bridge, still exists. The officers made detailed records about the mount’s altitute, peaks, construction sites, water sources, rainfall,  trees and animals.
The beauty and fresh air of Ba Na encouraged the  French to build a resort here. By the late 1940s,  Ba Na resort had more than 200 private villas and lots of public works. Ba Na became a small beautiful resort town.

The August Revolution started in 1945 and the French military forces was defeated and withdrew. Vietnamese civil employees in Ba Na returned to their home towns and the beautiful tourist town became deserted.
During the national struggles against the French and American invaders and throughout the national economic crisis, the Ba Na resort lay hidden in the old forest of the giant Truong Son mountain range.
In the early 1990s, when the Danang tourism sector began to develop, the city authorities began carrying out the master plan for the area, building roads and providing power to Ba Na. In 1998, the road was expanded and cars could travel to the mount. An 800-metre cable way was built to take tourists from Vong Nguyet hill to central Ba Na resorts, hotels, restaurants and so on...

  About Mi Quang: Quang noodle
This is the popular country dish in Hoian and Quang Nam and Da Nang. The noodle is yellow in color and made from rice flour. It is mixed with shrimp, pork and vegetables, and topped with grilled rice paper and spices.
This dish's ingredients include rice, vegetables and meat. After being soaked in water, the rice is ground to a fine powder and made into attractive smooth noodles. You can use pork, chicken, fish, crab or shrimp to make the broth. The noodles are yellow, somewhat distinct from Pho. However, the main reason for having this color is to be in harmony with the colors of shrimps and crabs.

Quang soft noodle soup tastes best when being served with a variety of herbs, such as mint leaves, cabbage, onion, coriander and so on. What makes Quang noodle soups unique is the richness of the broth and the crushed peanut toppings on the noodles.

 E/ Best time to visit
The best time to visit Da Nang is from February to May, when the skies are sunnier and humidity levels lower. The summer months of June through August can get uncomfortably hot and sticky with temperatures of 33-37°C. It can also get crowded during these months since this is the time of year that sees a lot of domestic tourists.

There are two seasons. The wet season lasts from August to December and the dry from January to July. Cold winds are occasional in winter but they are not severe and are short.

The annual average temperature is 26oC. The highest temperature soars to  35 - 40oC in the months of June, July and August. The lowest is 18-23oC in December, January and February. 1487m high  Ba Na mountain has an average temperature of 20oC.
The average humidity is 83.4%. The highest is 85.67-87.67% in October and November, and the lowest, 76.67-77.33% is in June and July.
On the average, the city receives 2,504.57mm of rainfall a year. The highest rainfall is 550-1,000mm per month in October and November and the lowest 23-40mm per month in January, February, March and April.
The annual average sunshine hours are 2,156.2, with the maximum in May and June of 234 - 277 hours per month and the minimum in November and December of 69 -165 hours per month.

No... No... No: No polishing shoes and  no street vendors on Tran Phu street. Da Nang is the first city in Vietnam where you almost will not see the beggars and street vendors.

Vietnam’s Dragon Bridge honored at int’l lighting awards

The Rong (Dragon) Bridge in the central Vietnamese city of Da Nang, the world’s longest dragon-shape steel bridge, has claimed an award at the 2014 International Association of Lighting Designers’ (IALD) International Lighting Awards.

The bridge on the Han River won the “Special Citations” Award for “a whimsical, well-crafted multimedia experience communicating national and religious identity”, IALD said in a statement.
According IALD, the US$85-million bridge features 166 meters of undulating steel in the shape of a dragon, the symbol of prosperity in Vietnamese culture.
This unique and beautifully lit bridge, which also breathes fire and sprays water, is set to become Da Nang’s new landmark, the pride of local people, and attract more tourists to the city, the agency said.
An IALD release quoted an unnamed judge as saying: “Delightful! This project transcends the notion of monumental bridge with dynamic color-changing lighting, creating an iconic sculpture in the skyline that is both reverent and whimsical.”
“The purposeful integration of the lighting hardware articulates the dragon's form, and the fire-breathing dragon head is just the cherry on the top!” said the judge.
The bridge’s lighting was designed by the Ho Chi Minh City-based ASA Studios’ team of Tran Van Thanh, Nguyen Van Nam Khoa, Ngo Thanh Phat and Van Quoc Kiet, with additional architecture credits of Louis Berger Group and lighting mechanical and electrical design of Philips Lightings Vietnam.
This is the first time a structure in Vietnam and designed by a local architect claimed the 31 year history of the honor awards.
Architect Tran Van Thanh said he is "really moved" when a lighting structure in Vietnam appeared in the world’s map of awarded structures. "I hope Vietnam will have more structures to be honored in the future,” he said
The Rong Bridge was highly evaluated not only because of its special design but also its role in promoting the image of Da Nang and Vietnam, he was quoted by Tuoi Tre as saying.
Earlier, the Rong Bridge has won two prestigious international awards - FX Design Awards 2013 and Lighting Design Awards 2014.
The IALD’s 2014 awards in Las Vegas honored 16 award winners representing architectural lighting design projects from ten countries, among about 200 applications.

Da Nang, Hoi An receive Asian Townscape Award
Central Da Nang and Hoi An cities have recently been chosen for the 2013 Asian Townscape Award honoring cities which are considered outstanding in landscape architecture.

The award is jointly given by the UN-Habitat Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific, the Asian Habitat Society, the Fukuoka Asian Urban Research Center, and the Asian Townscape Design Society.

The official award announcement and award ceremony is being held today, November 26 in Fukuoka city, Japan.

In 1999, the ancient town of Hoi An was declared a world heritage site by UNESCO for being a well-preserved example of a Southeast Asian trading port in the 15th to 19th centuries, and containing buildings with a unique blend of local and foreign influences. Since then, it has been voted one of the top tourist destinations by several tourism magazines. In January of this year, Hoi An City was voted the world’s best tourism city by UK tourism magazine Wanderlust. Last month, the city also ranked second in a list of the Top 10 Asian Cities by prestigious American tourism magazine Condé Nast Traveler.

Da Nang’s My Khe beach was voted one of the six most attractive beaches on the planet by American business magazine Forbes last year.
