A/ Nha Trang - Doc Let overview

1/ Nha Trang
         * Vietnam's beach capital
Many people in Saigon and the South Vietnam knows the famous romantic song "Nha Trang ngay ve" (Nha Trang the day coming back). Ask all of them that which beach city they wish to travel to, the answer is Nha Trang

Weekend, summer and holiday see a lot of tourists from Ha Noi and the North Vietnam flying straight to Nha Trang to enjoy beach break.

Well, for many years, Nha Trang has been the most popular beach city of the country. There have been great invesments into the city's hospitality industry with a lot of hotel, resort, amusement park "big brothers" such as Novotel, Sheraton, Evason Mandara (Six Senses), Vinpearl Land (Vietnam's disneyland with longest sea-crossing cable car system, Vietnam's largest seaside water park, 5-star resort on Hon Tre isalnd...)...

In comparison with other beach destinations like Mui Ne, Phu Quoc, Hoi An, Da Nang, Nha Trang is the busiest beach city of the country with many restaurants, bars, shops, travel agencies open till quite late.

         * Swimming, snorkeling, diving, water sports, mud bath, ancient Cham towers and more and more
If Mui Ne draws a lot of tourists thanks to its relaxed atmosphere of seaside leafy resorts, Nha Trang with its beautiful long sandy beach and many offshore islands is a destination for those who look for swimming, snorkeling and diving (but dont expect to see many fishes. In fact you will see just some small fishes near some islands! The coral reefs are just small and not really colourful too)

One day in Nha Trang is full of activities. Most tourists enjoy a boat trip offshore with dancing on boat, swimming in the crystal-blue water, snorkeling, watching coral reef and sipping cocktails while floating on the sea and music is on...

Many water sport games are available at beachside or offshore. A lot of scuba-diving tours are offered by many PADI dive operators

Then come to a relaxed day with enjoying mineral mud bath and hot swimming pool at Thap Ba hot  spring center.

My Son sanctuary in a valley near Hoi An is a must-see for those who want to explore Champa ancient temples and its kingdom. But a visit to the Ponagar temples in Nha Trang is nice too. The temples are beautifully located on a small leafy hill.

        * Nha Trang for kids
Well for adults too! Come to Vinpearl Land on Hon Tre island by the longest sea-crossing cable car system. Vinpearl Land has been trying to become Vietnam's Disneyland with many indoor and outdoor games in the Vietnam's largest seaside amusement park

The Thap Ba hot spring center has hot swimming pool for the kids too. There, your children can take bath in the mineral mud bath with you. Good fun.

2/ Doc Let beach
About 60km North of Nha Trang is Doc Let, one of the most beautiful beaches in Vietnam. This long, wide sandy beach has very clean, clear sea water with crystal-blue colour.

While most of tourists, both Vietnamese and foreigners, stay in Nha Trang, Doc Let is a quiet paradise. There are just some resorts, hotels and guesthouses here. And the beach is just crowded on weekends, holiday. So come to Doc Let and enjoy the whole beautiful beach!

A motorbike trip to Doc Let is great as you will have time to stop and watch the beautiful countryside alond the road, especially the green rice fields, vast lotus lake, blue sky and mountains...

    I love Doc Let beach!

Tran Phu street: the main street of the city

Hung Vuong, Biet Thu, Nguyen Thien Thuat streets along with a spider-like network of intersecting alleys constitute the Nha Trang's backpacker area. Its just a 2-mintue walk from Hung Vuong street to Tran Phu street and Nha trang beach.

9 Spa
Location: Nha Trang, Vietnam

Project area: 450 sqm

Material:

Project year: 2013

(Eng) 9 spa is a set of nine hotel houses with spas, mud and mineral baths together with a small bar and restaurant. The buildings are perched in the folds of halfway terrace up to a rock hill, which makes the hotels hideaway from the eventful area downhill.

Using indigenous building techniques and materials, and adopting local custom to managing the project, 90 village masons, carpenters and craft persons were enlisted to build the hotels in a period of 9 months. The project was designed as a combination of dry-stacked stone with wood structure and coconut leaves, quarried right on the site.

The houses are set up in different specific angles and placed separately by a distance, considered as an entrance lobby for each house, to not only let rain water run down easily from top of the mountain but also allow ventilation to the below area. Moreover, the roof structure is constructed in a traditional way by mortise and tenon joint techniques. Above this wooden structure, the roof is a combination of 3 layers, 20 mm thick wood panels, which gives an aesthetic look to ceiling and links all beams together, water proof membrane and 30 mm coconut leaves, respectively. Besides, the project also makes use of old furniture from nearby buildings such as doors, tables and chairs or patterned tiles, giving the buildings a distinctive look, the beauty or serenity of old items that comes with age.

The bar, with less than a dozen seats, is above from the ground, thereby linking the outside space to the interior and offering a new viewpoint to the customers, while not touching to existing nature. In other words, by any means necessary, nature is treated as the core value, that its beauty can be contemplated at every corner of the project.

In conclusion, nine hotel houses are linked by a continuous wooden roof, reflecting its surround environment and landscape. By using local materials as rock and wood together with adopting old furniture, 9 spa gives an extraordinary value to the existing project.

5/ 4-island tour
The most popular tour in Nha Trang. All the guesthouses, hotels selling this tour with almost same price with tour operators. Some long-running tour operators: Number 4 boat trip, Mama Linh boat tour...
The good and the bad, read carefully what mentioned below before making a decision.

    Price: 120,000VND/person (about 6USD)

Include: Pick up and drop off. Lunch served on the boat and the food is quite "cold", in fact, just put something into stomach (Some are not really hygiene. So pack your lunch if you have a not really good stomach). Some wine. Boat.

Exclusive: entrance fees to Tam island, Tri Nguyen aquarium (My experience: dont visit Tri Nguyen aquarium. Nothing interesting there!)

What you get: Fun, fun and fun. Joining this tour, you will have time to dance with a lot of people on boat, float on the water while sipping some wine, laugh with the singing voice of tour guide, swim in crystal blue water with life jacket...

 What you maybe feel dissapointed:
The name is 4-island tour but in fact it is not really about discovering the islands. Dont expect to have time on these. Most of the time, the boat just move around.
You can do snorkeling but dont expect to see many fishes. In fact, there are just some small ones.
The coral reefs are not really interesting.
The Tri Nguyen aquarium is just designed for kids! (Well, its just the poor place to get money from tourists)
Some staffs are not really polite. Many with tattoos

10/ Seawalking in Vietnam’s Nha Trang a new tourist draw
TuoiTreNews.vn - A diving firm in Nha Trang City in central Vietnam has piloted a new service which allows tourists to walk on the seabed and explore the rich marine life at the same time.

The service is being run by Holiday Diving Co. Ltd. on a 90-day pilot basis, starting on Sunday.
Le Hong Tai, the company director, said yesterday that the rafts on which the service is provided are positioned on Hon Mot Islet in Nha Trang Bay.
What holiday seawalkers need for such a trip, which lasts between 15 and 20 minutes, is an oxygen tank and a specially designed helmet.
The helmet weighs up to 40 kilograms but gives the seawalkers the feeling of bearing the weight of merely four kilograms while walking underwater.
Guides will accompany tourists on their trip, which provides them with a rare chance to admire schools of fish and coral at close proximity in a sea expanse of around 50 square meters.
Truong Kinh, director of the Nha Trang Bay Management, believes the new service is a highly compelling, ecologically-friendly tourist activity.
Tourists are pictured enjoying a seawalking trip in Nha Trang. Photo:Tuoi Tre
Since January, many visitors to Nha Trang, the capital city of Khanh Hoa Province, have included these two forms of entertainment in their must-try list: sea diving and exploring the craft of pearl mollusk culture.
Hoang Gia Pearl Farming Co., a local travel company, has offered tours that provide tourists with the chance to experience sea diving and behold pearl-yielding mollusks in the city.
The experiences include exploring how pearl mollusks are cultivated, catching the invertebrate, and slicing them open to get their pearls.

C/ Where to stay in Nha Trang

Hot news: Nha Trang is in low season now (April till May, 2015). With 30USD, you have a nice big room with balcony, bathtub, buffet breakfast in a 3-star hotel, with swimming pool, and near the beach). Recommended hotel: Nhi Phi hotel (Book online)

Nha Trang, the capital beach city of Vietnam, sees new and new hotels, resorts, guesthouses, hostels. The competitiveness is hard and thats really good for budget travellers

With 7USD, you can have a dorm bed with breakfast in the Backpacker area (Nguyen Thien Thuat street)

With about 10USD, you can stay in a nice guesthouse with beautiful room, A/C, Tivi, fridge, located in the center of city

Pay about 20USD, you see yourself in a 2-star hotel with nice design room, lift

With 40USD up, you will stay in a 3-star hotel with beautiful room, most with breakfast, some offer free gym and baby swimming pool...

Most guesthouses, 2 and 3-star hotels are located on Hung Vuong street and  its alley; Tue Tinh street; Nguyen Thien Thuat street; Tran Quang Khai street (Nha Trang backpacker area). Among these streets, Hung Vuong and its alley as well as Tran Phu street are the best places to look for nice guesthouses and standard hotels

Please note that in Nha Trang city, most 3-star hotels have swimming pool but they are just the baby ones for looking not really for swimming. Thats quite funny as the hotels built the pool on the top floor to get the called 3-star standard!

Tran Phu, the main street of the city running along Nha Trang beach has many standard hotels as well as 4 and 5-star hotels

Some 5-star resorts are strategically located on beautiful island or on the hill with private beaches such as Vinpearl Land resort and Mia resort

Nha Trang sees a lot of Vietnamese tourists in holidays. Room rate soars and most of the hotels are full. Its good to book room in advance if you come at those times

The research was done on 26th and 27th May 2012. Its the low season in Nha Trang. So expect to pay  more in high season (especially for 3 and 4-star hotels which run businesss according to season)

In Vietnam holidays and new year, the room rate rise sharply!

To get a better price at 3, 4, 5-star hotels, check it with Agoda, Booking.com, Expedia, Ivivu.com... Some 2-star hotels and hostels also have contract with Agoda...

D/ Food and Drink in Nha Trang
Nha Trang's most famous noodle soup is Bun ca (sea fish noodle soup). Local people enjoy it for breakfast, lunch and dinner, at a price of 25,000VND. "Bun ca" is sold everywhere in the city.

Different with other beach cities/towns in Vietnam, Nha Trang not only has seafood but also is home to famous salangane islands which offer high quality salangane nests

Nha Trang people who stay in Saigon use their homeland fishsauce. Together with Phu Quoc and Phan Thiet, Mui Ne, fishsauce in Nha Trang is a speciality in Vietnam.

Hung Vuong, Biet Thu, Nguyen Thien Thuat streets which are called backpacker area of the city have many restaurants, bars, coffee shops "designed" for tourists. Nice restaurants but "not local" price!

If you dont want to go far away from backpacker area and want to enjoy local food, then come to Nguyen Thi Minh Khai street. It has many small eateries/shops offering noodle coup (Bun ca), steamed rice with fried pork/chicken/squid..., Nha Trang bread. The foods are just acceptable.

The Sailing Club on Tran Phu street, along the Nha Trang beach is a meeting point of young foreign tourists at night.

19/ Salvaged ring coffee house built from scrap wood

Vietnamese office a21studio used recycled wood to construct the curving framework of this coffee house, which encircles a courtyard near the city of Nha Trang.

The Salvaged Ring structure was designed by a21studio for a carpenter who wanted to utilise a surplus of scrap wood collected over his career to build a coffee house near a motorway on the outskirts of the city.

"The advantages of using the salvaged wood are that it saves the owner money, and it gives the wood another life instead being left useless in the warehouse," architect Toan Nghiem told Dezeen.

The timber skeleton supports a thatched roof that spirals down from an entrance near the road to cover a lower level with seating scattered around a central garden.

Arranging the split-level structure around a courtyard utilises a standard building typology employed throughout the region to provide sheltered and naturally ventilated outdoor spaces.

Wooden offcuts were used to create louvred panels, which are connected to make a wall that recalls traditional shutter doors.

The louvred surface screens the interior from the sun and the road at the upper level, while a solid stone wall reduces the amount of noise that reaches the garden below.

Entering from the road through a large opening in the wooden wall, guests can follow the curve of the roof to a concrete staircase that leads down to the lower level.

A route winds between the tables, which are placed on large concrete slabs. It culminates at a doorway in the stone wall at the opposite side of the ring-shaped space.

A timber staircase with balustrades made from steel reinforcing bars leads back up to the entrance level.
Traditional carpentry techniques including mortise and tenon joints were used to connect the variously sized sections of wood needed to build the frame, meaning no additional timber had to be sourced.

"A disadvantage of the scrap wood is that we don't have many sizes of wood frames, so we have to combine different elements to make sure the structure is stable," said Nghiem. "However, I think that this gives the building distinction."

The palette of natural materials also included coconut leaves, used to form the thatched roof, and stones that were used to make low walls next to the entrance. These complement the project's natural aesthetic and sustainable credentials.

Here's a project description from a21studĩo:

Salvaged ring
Salvaged ring is a coffee shop located along side with a highway in the countryside of Nha Trang, Vietnam. After years working, the owner, which is a local carpenter, has a big stock of scrap wood that he wishes to give another life to them rather than leaving it fall into oblivion. Therefore, an idea that a building salvages these pieces of wood has come to life.

The first impression of the coffee shop is its unusual curved thatch roof that extended from the highway down to the riverbank. That single roof connects two different levels into one and softens the rigid structure supporting below. Guests are led by an exotic route from the exterior to the interior around courtyard created by the ring roof.

Courtyard, as we know, is the result of cultural and climatic conditions in the region. Furthermore, it is also used as spatial generator and climate modifier. In this project, the courtyard is organised so as to adapt many functions and views in the buildings. As the result, the activities are taken place in the peace and quiet inside place linking to the river, apart from the noisy street outside. Moreover, it allows solar gain and natural ventilation, which are suitable to Vietnam climate. However, overusing courtyards can increase the heat and brightness causing inconvenience to people. Inner garden, roof materials and fenestration are carefully considered as the most appropriate solutions.

The scrap wood, which different sizes and shapes, are adjusted to adapt new functions. The small pieces are exploited for louvers at the entrance, which can prevent the heat and noise from the highway as well as being decoration patterns that remind people about old wooden doors used many years ago. Besides, the main structure is formed by larger parts, connected by traditional mortise and tenon techniques. In short, the pieces are used every possible means to be applied into the building so that there is no any new trees cut down. Furthermore, except wood, by using rock, and local coconut leaf, lively materials, salvaged ring is filled with harmony and native feelings.

In conclusion, by taking advantages of scrap wood pieces stocked for many years, the salvaged ring is a highlight for carpentry technique together with striking spaces that can give an extraordinary value for the peaceful village.

Khanh Hoa salangane nests from Vietnam Pictorial News
Vietnam is one of few countries in the world that has an industry of farming and processing salagane nests. Khanh Hoa Province has the largest number of islands which are home to the salanganes and its products have been rated as having the best quality.
700-year-old business of raising salanganesThousands of years ago, salangane nests were considered a precious product of heaven and earth which served as “a miracle drug” so it was reserved only for kings.
According to history books, the business of producing salangane nests in Vietnam originated from Khanh Hoa Province and has existed for nearly 700 years. Legend has it that in 1328, during a mission to the south, Le Van Dat, a commander of the provincial army in the Tran Dynasty discovered many islands inhabited by the salanganes in the sea area of Binh Khang District (now Khanh Hoa Province). Since then the business of producing salangane nests has developed and Le Van Dat has been honoured as the ancestor of this business in Khanh Hoa Province. Every year, on the 10th of May according to the lunar calendar, the residents in Khanh Hoa organize a salagane nest festival to commemorate those who are credited with establishing the salangane nest production business.

On a fine day in July, we took a speedboat ride to visit some of the 30 salangane islands in Khanh Hoa Province. The most famous islands are Noi, Ngoai and Sam. From afar, we saw some watch towers of the guards on the steep cliffs. Going closer we heard the noises made by the birds. Khoa, a guard on the island took us to visit the birds’ caves which were very deep and dark with steep cliffs. Under the light of torch we saw countless salangane nests on the cliffs. Khoa said that the salanganes lived in the wild areas. If there was human smell, they were scared and would leave their nests, so their caves are strictly protected to prevent people from going near them.

According to oriental medicine, salangane nests have a sweet taste and a temperate property. They are nutritious and healthy food for asthenia, fatigue, anorexia, poor flood pressure, insomnia, quick heartbeat, illness and yellow skin. They help increase resistance and immunity to disease.
Ngoai Island is several kilometers away. It has the largest number of salangane caves, making up two-thirds of the nests produced by the province. The sea here is very rough, so the caves must be carefully protected. The company has taken many measures, such as making roofs for the caves, building dykes and installing surveillance cameras.
Vo Van Cam, head of the team harvesting the bird nests of the company told us that harvesting the nests is a risky business, but three generation of his family have been doing it. The birds usually make their nests on the high cliffs, so the workers must be skilled and brave mountain-climbers. To harvest their nests they have to erect bamboo scaffoldings on the steep cliffs. In some places where they can not erect scaffoldings they must use rope to secure themselves to the mountain side, which is hundreds of metres high, in order to climb up.

According to scientists at the Southern Institute of Science and Technology, compared to other countries having salangane nest production industries in Southeast Asia, such as Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia, Vietnam has a suitable sea climate and environment and a rich source of food for the salanganes. The birds in Vietnam grow well and yield larger and whiter nests with a better quality.
Apart from the natural source on the islands, Vietnam has successfully raised the salanganes in houses. Khanh Hoa Province has also taken the lead in this method which is seen as a new model with high economic efficiency. Nguyen Xuan Vien, Director of Sanatech Centre of the Khanh Hoa Salangane Nest Company said that the center has transferred the technology of raising the salanganes in houses to other areas throughout the country, promoting the development of the bird population.
Now the whole country has about 1,500 salangane farming houses with an output of one tonne of nests a year of which Khanh Hoa Province produces half. It is expected that by 2020, the number of these houses will increase to about 10,000, making a great contribution to preserving this species of bird and increasing the national output.

Development of a golden businessFor over 700 years, the business of raising and processing salangane nests in Khanh Hoa Province has developed strongly and has become a leading economic strength of the locality.
Vietnam has about 50 salangane islands with over 180 caves, of which 29 islands with 142 caves from Van Ninh District to Cam Ranh City are under the management of the Khanh Hoa Salangane Nest Company. The company produces over three tonnes of nests a year.
To process this high-grade product, the company has invested in a closed, automatic production system using the advanced technology of Germany and Italy. It has also applied the ISO 9001:2000 and HACCP systems to ensure the stable quality of the products and enhance the competitiveness of the company during international integration.

Truong Tan Phi, manager of the salagane nest processing plant of the company said that it was the largest plant in Southeast Asia with a capacity of about 30 million products a year. The plant specializes in producing canned salangane nests from natural resources taken from the islands by the company. Khanh Hoa bird nest products are produced with modern technology reaching international standards in combination with traditional secrets, so they still have the natural essence and high nutrition.
According to the research results of the Biotechnology Center at the University of Fisheries, and the Institute of Biotechnology at the Vietnamese Academy of Science and Technology, Khanh Hoa salangane nests are a pure natural food with abundant nutrients, including 18 essential amino acids.
In recent years, although the amount of exported nests was only 5-6tonnes/year, the price of Vietnam’s salangane nests is always higher than that of other countries in Southeast Asia due to better quality. The price of the cave nests in Vietnam is 60-90 million VND/kg while house nests are 30-60 million VND/kg. Khanh Hoa bird nests products have been exported to 21 countries around the world, including large markets, such as China, Taiwan, the USA, Australia and Singapore.

Le Huu Hoang, General Director of Khanh Hoa Salangane Nest Company said: “Salangane nests are a gift that nature has bestowed on Khanh Hoa, so we must have the responsibility to preserve, protect and develop this valuable asset. Over 30 nest products of the company have been trademarked in 42 countries and territories around the world. This shows the strong pervasion of these precious and unique products.”

In the future, if there is a reasonable investment strategy, Khanh Hoa Province can become a center of high-quality salangane nests in the world. These products can develop into a strong brand to promote the country’s image in the international arena.

Fake pearl in Nha Trang?

A story of fake pearl in Phu Quoc island: Cheap Chinese knockoffs overrun Vietnam’s Pearl Island

A night market stall on Phu Quoc Islands sells two pearl rings for VND100,000 (US$5). Photo: Tien Trinh
An abundance of fake and cheap pearls widely sold on Phu Quoc has ruined its reputation as a producer of some of the world's finest organic gems.
Tourists visiting the "Pearl Island" as Phu Quoc is otherwise known can easily buy a pearl for just VND50,000 (US$2.5). Kiosks hawking "Real Phu Quoc Pearls" are literally everywhere on the island--hotels, restaurants, souvenir shops and even at the grocery stores.
The owner of one souvenir shop at the Dinh Cau Night Market told a reporter: “On this island there are Phu Quoc pearls and nothing else.”
However, experts and insiders say that only a few farms sell real cultured pearls and natural pearls, harvested by divers, are now extremely rare.
Le Thi My Dung, the owner of the Quoc An Pearl Farm in Duong To Commune, said farming pearls is a difficult job that takes at least three years before a harvest.
“A strict culturing process yields only 5-10 percent good pearls,"  she said. "We don't have enough cultured pearls to meet demand and never sell to the island's many hawkers.”
Dung said a single high-quality pearl can fetch hundreds of millions of dong.
“A pearl cannot be sold for just a few hundred thousand dong,” she said.
More fake than real
Hai Nang, a diver on the island, said many locals once hunted pearls which weren't nearly as rare as they are these days.
“Phu Quoc’s real pearls are famous for their purity and durability. Some fishermen make a killing after getting lucky on a single precious pearl.”
“Many people still dive for pearls today, but it's much harder to eke out a living,” he said.
Japanese and Australian firms set up pearl farms on Phu Quoc in the 1990s and exported the fruits of their operations back home.
The global economic crisis forced them to abandon their farms and leave their technology to their local partners.
Only a few households still cultivate pearls, which they only sell at their own shops.
A retired pearl trader on Phu Quoc, who asked to be identified only as V., said everything else being sold on the island is a fake or cheap Chinese imitation.
“Only pearl farms sell real pearls, the rest are from other places, mostly China,” he said. “Fake pearls have badly affected Phu Quoc's reputation.”
V. said he used to buy Chinese pearls in the northern province of Quang Ninh by the sackful.
“Natural or cultured pearls aren't perfect spheres like the Chinese ones,” he said.
V. said Chinese pearls are produced by binding ground oyster shells with adhesive and polishing them to make it difficult to distinguish them from real ones.
Many pearl farmers say one can easily tell them apart by rubbing the pearl on a rough surface or burning them. Real pearl don't scuff or melt.
Most vendors on the island won't let you do either, saying it will damage the pearl.
Nguyen Van Dung, chairman of the Saigon Jewelry Association, said you know a pearl isn't real if the vendor won't allow you to test it.
“A good pearl can fetch VND10-20 million ($472-944) while a low-quality or fresh-water pearl is only worth a few hundred thousand dong.”

VIETNAM'S PEARL ISLAND

Dubbed “Pearl Island,” Phu Quoc sits inside a UNESCO-recognized World Biosphere Reserve off Vietnam's southeastern coast.
A district of Kien Giang Province, it has a total area of 574 square kilometers (222 square miles) and a permanent population of approximately 85,000.
According to the island’s authorities, about 500,000-600,000 tourists visit Phu Quoc each year, of which 40 percent are foreigners.
In May, the Ministry of Planning and Investment called for Singapore to support Vietnam in developing Phu Quoc into a regional hub for tourism, science and technology.
A visa exemption policy that took effect last March allowing foreign visitors to Phu Quoc up to 30-day visa exemptions.
Visa waivers will also be offered to foreigners who transit at any airport or seaport in Vietnam on their way to Phu Quoc.

J/ Motorbike and Prostitution; Safety
Along Tran Phu, Hung Vuong, Biet Thu streets, there are many motorbike drivers looking for tourists to offer "Bum bum" services.
Remember, prostitution is illegal in Vietnam. And take care of yourself!

Safety
In general, Nha Trang is very safe, but you should be careful with your bag, wallet and other valuables. Dont travel alone at late night, especially along Tran Phu, the main street along the beach.

One week ago (in February, 2013), I met two Netherlanders who were robbed by two young Vietnamese driving motorbike. They lost a bag with Iphone and a Canon camera.

Today (27 Feb, 2013), on Thanh Nien newspaper, there is a report of two Russian robbed on tran Phu street again. And one of two was attacked by knife!

Unprecedented, 200kg shark stranded at Nha Trang beach
Experts from the Nha Trang Oceanography Institute confirmed that the almost 200kg fish which stranded on a Nha Trang beach in central Khanh Hoa province on Dec 26 is a member of the shark family and this is the first time that a shark has been found in the area

According to the experts, the long-tailed shark, which was stranded into the beach in front of Phu Dong Park in Nha Trang City, is scientifically termed Common Thiesher Shark Alopias Sp.

Chu Anh Khanh, from the institute, said that when he arrived at the beach around 4.30pm shortly after being alerted by locals, the fish was still alive but quite frail with several wounds on its body. It was then pulled ashore by several locals and tourists.

The fish is a male, which is over 2m long and weighs some 180kg. Its body measures some 60-70cm in diameter.

“I told the institute leaders that if the fish died, I would take it to the institute, where its body will serve as a specimen. However, several foreign tourists insisted that the fish be released back into the sea as it was still alive,” Khanh added.

“But when released into the sea, the critically wounded shark was battered by large waves several times before it disappeared altogether. It’s highly likely that the fish is dead,” he noted.

According to the Nha Trang Oceanography Institute, the long-tailed shark typically inhabits the area some 60-90km from shore and 366m beneath the sea surface. The fish has a small snout and usually preys on schools of small fish.

The fish is highly valued by commercial fishers for its meat, fins, hide, and liver oil and is also a favorite choice among recreational anglers. The species has a low rate of reproduction and cannot withstand heavy fishing pressure for long.

With commercial exploitation rampant in many parts of the world, the species, which poses little danger to humans due to its relatively small teeth and timid disposition, has been ranked as Vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
