Hanoi airport bus
Just outside of Hanoi's Noi Bai international airport, there are public buses running to the Old Quarter of Hanoi. It takes about 1hour and you can get off at Long Bien station (near Long Bien bridge). From this station, its just a some 7-minute walk to Luong Ngoc Quyen street of Old Quarter. From Old Quarter to Noi Bai airport, come to Long Bien bus station to get on the bus.

Travel time: over 1 hour 

Ticket: 5,000VND with air-conditioned

Note: There are green electric cars running between Noi Bai airport and bus station of airport. Its just a 3-minute drive. Ticket: 5,000VND. Otherwise, you have to walk out of Noi Bai, cross the street to bus station of airport.

2/ By Bus
Most tourists come to Hanoi by sleeping bus from Hue city.

The bus often leaves at 5:00 - 6:00PM and arrive in Hanoi about 7:00 - 7:30AM

TheSinhTourist, one of  the most reliable open bus operators in Vietnam, has daily sleeping bus running Hue - Hanoi. In Hue, buy ticket and get on the bus at number 48 Nguyen Tri Phuong street. In Hanoi, buy ticket at 52 Luong Ngoc Quyen street and 64 Tran Nhat Duat street. Get on/off the bus at Tran Nhat Duat.

B/ Hanoi main bus stations
There are many bus stations in Hanoi. Among them, you should know the way to My Dinh, Giap Bat and Luong Yen bus stations...

My Dinh, Hanoi's biggest bus station, has many daily buses to all main destinations of Northeast and Northwest. There are some buses leaving fot Ninh Binh in the South of Hanoi from here too.

Giap Bat bus stations has many daily buses to the South of Hanoi and some buses to Northwest provinces.

If you would like to take bus + express boat to Cat Ba island (Lan Ha bay), come to Luong Yen bus station.


Getting to My Dinh, Giap bat, Luong Yen bus stations by public bus
Get on bus: from Luong Ngoc Quyen street of Old Quarter walk straight to Chuong Duong bridge. Turn right is Tran Quang Khai street. There is one small bus station here leaving for My Dinh, Giap Bat, Luong Yen

Travel time: 50 - 60 minutes (to My Dinh)
                     35 - 45 minutes (to Giap Bat)
                     20 - 25 minutes (to Luong Yen)

Fare: 3,000VND/pax with air-conditioned

Getting to Cat Ba island (by bus + boat)
Take a 10-minute motorbike ride from the center of Hanoi Old Quarter to Luong Yen bus station. Cost: 25,000VND

Hoang Long bus operator in Luong Yen bus station offers 4 daily buses + express boats to Cat Ba island. The big bus and the express boat have good air-conditioned. 
Firstly, the bus takes 2-hour drive to Hai Phong city, then another 30 minutes to Dinh Vu ferry/boat station. 
Take express boat to Gor ferry/boat station of Cat Hai town.
Bus from Cat Hai town to Cat Ba town (20km, pass by Cat Ba national park head quarter)

Total travel time: 3.5 - 4hours

Departure: 5:20AM - 7:20AM - 11:20AM - 1:30PM

C/ Tran Quy Cap train station (leaving for Lao Cai - Sapa)
Hanoi - Lao Cai
Most tourists take night sleeping train departing from Tran Quy Cap train station of Hanoi  and arriving in Lao Cai train station of Lao Cai city in early morning.

Departure: 9:00PM - 9:30PM - 10:10PM
Arrive:  4:00 - 5:00AM
Price: 194,000VND (Air-conditioned soft seating) and 485,000VND (Air-conditioned soft sleeping)

A motorbike drive from Hanoi's Old Quarter to Tran Quy Cap train station costs about 35,000VND

Lao Cai - Sapa
In early morning, there are many local buses in front of the Lao Cai train station taking tourists to Sapa town 
Travel distance: 38km
Travel time: about 1 hour
Price: 50,000VND
