2/ Can Gio district
Can Gio district is nearly 25km Southeast of  Sai Gon city center.

Sai Gon city with 24 districts, cover an area of more than 2,000 km2, with a population of nearly 10 millions. Most of Saigonese stay in the center of city, name dictrict 1, dictrict 3, district 5...

Can Gio district with nearly 700 km2 but just with about 71,300 people (by 2010). Its the poorest district of Sai Gon city. Most of Can Gio people are farmers, fishermen. The main economic activities are agriculture, aquaculture, fisheries and salt production.

So leaving the center of Sai Gon for Can Gio district means youre leaving the most crowded area for the most peaceful area and We could say youre leaving the most expensive and richest district for the poorest district.

If the center of Sai Gon is always on the move, Can Gio is so quiet. When the sun goes down, almost everybody in Can Gio stays at home and is going to sleep early.

Mangrove forest - world biosphere reserve
In Vietnam war, Can Gio mangrove forest as well as the other mangrove forests in the Southern Vietnam provided strong resistance bases for Vietnam guerillas. To destroy the living and hiding areas of guerillas, bombs, canonfires, toxic chemical, especially "agent orange" were used by USA army. Of the total mangrove area in the Southern Vietnam of 291,000 ha, 105,000 ha or 36 percent was sprayed by herbicides and chemical defoliants in high concentrations one or more times. And the Can Gio mangrove forest was almost completely destroyed. Many species of fauna such as crocodiles, tigers became extinct. Monkeys, lizards, birds, which used to be found in great numbers also decreased gradually after war...

Awareness of significance of mangrove forest, Sai Gon city invested in reforestation since 1978. By year of 1998, 40,000 ha of dense mangrove forest was planted. In 2000, Can Gio mangrove forest was recognised by UNESCO as the world biosphere reserve. And Can Gio mangrove forest now covers an area of 74,750 ha. It is regarded as "green lung" of Sai Gon city.

The Can Gio mangrove forest has a high biodiversity with more than 127 species of fish, 130 species of bird, 30 species of reptiles, 19 species of mammals and 52 species of flora...

3/ Monkey island and salt water crocodiles
There are more than 1,000 monkeys in nature in Can Gio (Vietnamese: " Lam vien Can Gio"). They see tourists everyday. On weekends they come out a lot as more tourists come with food for feeding (Its not recommended to bring food and feed the monkeys!)

Its easy to see many baby monkeys running along the road, the mother carrying and feeding the newborn, the leaders are fighting for their positions in the group, a lot of monkeys hanging on the mangrove trees or on the roof of the house...

Attention!!! Dont touch the monkeys. Be careful with your belongings, especially your glasses, camera, caps, hats... The monkeys used to steal these things and run quickly into forest. Call security if the monkeys get angry and attack you (The security officers just always stand around)

Entrace fee for Monkey island (Lam vien Can Gio) is 30,000VND/adult/weekday; 35,000VND/adult/weekend

The Lam vien Can Gio raises many salt water crocodiles and there is fishing game here (20,000VND/time). The salt water crocodiles were in many rivers of Can Gio mangrove forest. They dissapeared because of toxic chemical sprayed in the Vietnam war. They were "famous" for hunting people!

4/ "Floating" guerilla base
Rung Sac guerilla base and monkey island are  in the same place: "Lam vien Can Gio" which is nearly 60km from the center of Sai Gon.

 Strategic location!!!

The Can Gio district and its guerilla base (Chien khu Rung Sac) are in Southeast of Sai Gon. While Cu Chi district with its tunnel is in Northwest of the city. Saigon center with USA army headquarter is in the middle.

Can Gio is also the only district of Sai Gon face East sea. So it has been the most important waterway of the city. Supplies for the center of city by using waterway such as gasoline tankers must pass through Can Gio's many rivers (The main rivers of Can Gio are Soai Rap river and Long Tau river. These rivers connect to Sai Gon river leading to the center of city)

So, Occupying Cu Chi and Can Gio were really important during war time!

In fact, the guerillas stay in the tunnel and mangrove forest and launched many suprisingly attacks to center of Sai Gon.

If Cu Chi tunnel was called "hidden base", Can Gio mangrove forest was known as "floating base".

Map: the center of Saigon is in middle of Can Gio distrcit and Cu Chi district
Can Gio has many rivers and creeks, canals (blue lines): On left hand is Soai Rap river. On right hand is Long Tau river. These rivers are borders with the other provinces of Vietnam (Tien Giang and Long An provinces of Mekong delta, BRVT province, Dong Nai province)

The main duties of Can Gio mangrove forest's guerillas were: Cut and destroyed supplies of USA by waterways; launched attacks to Sai Gon city center by rockets; received supplies from the North Vietnam..

Famous attacks of guerillas to Sai Gon:
* On 3rd December 1973, 8 guerillas attacked Nha Be gasoline depot and burned nearly 250 million litres of gasoline in 9 days continuously. Nha Be gasoline depot provided 80% gasoline for the Southern Vietnam

* Destroyed many gasoline tankers on Can Gio's rivers (8,000 to 10,000 liters of gasoline)

Tough and very poor living condition in mangrove forest:

The water in mangrove forest is brackish. Guerillas often suffered shortage of drinkable water. They had to keep and use rain water. Due to the dry season and great number of guerillas, they had a good idea: making drinkable water from brakish/salt water by boiling and condensing. Water was just for eating and drinking. The female gruerilla's hair became worse day after day...

Sometimes, there was not enough rice for eating. Guerillas had to eat edible forest's leaves. Thanks to its mangrove forest' fishes and crabs, guerillas had something for thier meals

Didnt have enough medicines for injured guerillas and healing was in bad situation. 4 army doctors and 2 army nurses were dead but they save 500 guerillas

There were a lot of mosquitos and crocodiles. Many guerillas were attacked and eaten by wild crocodiles!

Rest room was special designed so that the stool/dung wouldnt go out to the rivers and creeks

There were guesthouses, meeting room, making weapon room, hospital, supply room, store room... in the magrove forest base.

860 guerillas were killed when they were very young and most of them were single when they passed away. What was happiness of a couple life for them?

5/ Can Gio 30/4 beach
30/4 or 30th April is liberation date of Sai Gon
The beach is about 61km from the center of Sai Gon.
Can Gio district with dense mangrove forest and many rivers discharge into East sea. Silt and mud make the beach become muddy. So, its not for swimming. But coming to the beach when the water tide is low you can see many local people rake the ground to catch clam and oyster

12/ Can Gio whale greeting festival proposed as national heritage (TuoiTreNews)
The Ho Chi Minh City’s People’s Committee recently proposed that the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism recognize the Can Gio Whale greeting festival as a national, intangible cultural heritage.
The city’s Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism has also submitted to the ministry a complete profile of the festival.
The ministry is expected to consider the recognition before the festival takes place in the eighth month of the lunar calendar this year.
The Can Gio Whale greeting festival, which is held on the 15th day of the eighth month of the lunar calendar every year, is one of the biggest festivals involving whale worshipping and praying for good catches in the southern region.
According to the culture department’s profile of the festival, although the Can Gio festival, held in Can Thanh town in HCMC’s suburban Can Gio district, shares some similarities regarding main rituals with other whale greeting fests in the region, it boasts several distinctive features.
Unlike other fests, the Can Gio festival coincides with the Mid-Autumn festival, and is enriched with legends and folklore on the formation and development of the Can Gio salt marsh.

According to recent statistics, Can Gio is currently home to nine temples and shrines devoted to whales, which locals, particularly fishermen respectfully address and consider their savior and blessing provider.
