1/ Motorbike taxi in Vietnam
Name: Locally known as xe ôm ("Xe" means motorbike. "Ôm" is a verb, its meaning is "hug")

What is it: This lightweight mode of transportation is one of the most popular in Vietnam. It surpasses public buses when it comes to speed and mobility. Most of motorbike taxis are Honda (Wave and Super Dream).

How to call them: Passengers can find drivers who usually gather at public places such as schools, markets, hospitals and bus or train stations. In big cities such as Saigon, Can Tho, Nha Trang, Da Nang, Hue, Hanoi, the drivers will find you.

Fare: For a short ride under 2Km, it costs about 20,000VND. I usually pay 40,000VND for a 6-km ride

Law / regulation: You must wear offered helmet (But the helmets are in poor quality. In fact, they are useless!). Got your own helmet if you have: safe and clean!

Bargaining: Must (especially in bus / train stations, hospital...). Be careful with motorbike taxis in Hanoi city which often overcharge passengers. Should ask how much before using their service (its better to write it down)

Safety: Dont take motorbike at late night

5/ Driving motorbike in Vietnam
Popular routes / destinations: Ho Chi Minh trail (Central Highland); Northwest; Northeast

Is it safe?
Saigon has about 5-million motorbikes and its about 3 millions in Hanoi. You should be a very good rider if you want to drive motorbikes in these two cities.

Its quite easy to move around the Mui Ne town, Dalat, Nha Trang, Hue cities by motorbike.

Once out of the cities, the level of traffic drops off remarkably. On Ho Chi Minh trail, Northwest and Northeast roads, there are very few motorbikes. But you should be very careful when driving in these mountainous areas.

Helmet: Yes, you must wear it. Should have your own good one (Many Vietnamese wear vey bad quality ones!?)

Driving license?
Generally, traffic police officers won't stop Westerners driving motorbikes to check licences (Because they don't speak English or they don't feel confident to deal with it...)

Best time to travel along Vietnam by bike
December to February. Its cool in the South and a little bit cold (sometimes very cold) in the North. And with golden sunlight.

7/ Vietnam’s xe om service enters digital age with GrabBike app

(Thanh Nien News) The Malaysia-based company behind taxi-booking app GrabTaxi has launched a new service hosting motorbike drivers that you can call from your smartphone in Ho Chi Minh City.

GrabBike, which is available in the GrabTaxi app, allows users to order a xe om (motorbike taxi) via the popular iOS and Android app.
A GrabTaxi representative said Vietnam is the first market to roll out the GrabBike service. It will pilot the service in HCMC before extending it to other cities or countries.
Using GrabBike will be safer than hailing a traditional xe om, as information about the driver, his photo and the bike’s license plate will be displayed. Users will no longer have to worry about haggling or being ripped off as the estimated fees will be displayed on the app.
Those who sign up to become drivers must provide full personal information such as a state ID, drivers’ license, residency certificate and such.
GrabTaxi, which started in 2012, is currently in six markets across the region, including Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines and Indonesia. GrabTaxi is facing growing competition with new entrants such as Easy Taxi and Uber entering the region, according to AFP.
