Overview and Map
With a lot of hostels, guesthouses and budget hotels, Old Quarter is also known as Hanoi backpacker area.
Pay 5USD, you will have a dorm bed in a mini family hostel with air-con, hot shower, Internet, Wifi, breakfast and even draught beer.
Spend 6 - 10USD, you just take the lift to your dorm bed in a beautiful hostel with nice design, pool table, bar, English speaking staffs and even buffet breakfast.
With 14USD up, you will have a private room in a family-run guesthouse or standard hotel. The rooms are basic with air-con, Tivi, hot shower. Breakfast is usually not included.
Old Quarter also has many deluxe and boutique hotels. The room rates are between 25 - 70USD. A lot of rooms with artful decoration, cable LCD Tivi, minibar, in-room computer with free Internet access, buffet breakfast and daily complimentary fruit.
Most hostels, guesthouses and hotels offer free Hanoi city map.
Because Old Quarter area is quite large, I divide it into two main parts: The center of Old Quarter area and The Joseph's cathedral area. I prefer to stay in the center of Old Quarter

Attention
The research was done in the middle of September 2012.
Most of deluxe/boutique hotels are usually fully booked by tour groups, especially on weekends and holidays.
If you're going to stay in deluxe/boutique hotels, remember to check if the room rate is included 10% Tax and 5% service charge or not
Some deluxe hotels try to sell the deluxe/suite rooms and will say there is no superior room. Then when you're going to walk out of their hotels, the receptionists will say:" Ah... excuse me... We still have one superior room available"
Dont believe in some taxi/motorbike drivers who tell you that the hotel you are looking for is out of service/has been moved. Check it by yourself. And remember there is always a place to stay even in high season.
Orientation
Luong Ngoc Quyen, Ma May, Ta Hien are the main streets where you should come to look for accomodationOrientation
Famous TheSinhTourist open bus operator which has daily buses from/to Hanoi - Hue - Hoi An - Nha Trang - Dalat - Mui Ne - Sai Gon is at 52 Luong Ngoc Quyen street. (TheSinhTourist was known as Sinhcafe. Please pay attention that there are a lot of fake Sinhcafe around Old Quarter. And actually Sinhcafe has changed its name to TheSinhTourist. See "Transport" for this company profile)
Luong Ngoc Quyen is also near bus stations where you can take public bus to My Dinh bus station and Giap Bat bus station (depart for Northeast and Northwest Vietnam). Its easy to take airport bus number 17 to Hanoi's Noi Bai airport from here. (7000VND/ticket)
Motorbike taxi to train station and airport
A motorbike taxi to Tran Quy Cap train station which depart for Sapa town is about 30,000VND. Pay the same if you go to Temple of Literature
Pay 25,000VND for a motorbike taxi drive to Luong Yen bus station which has buses to Cat Ba island (Ha Long bay and Lan Ha bay)
Most hotels, guesthouses, hostels offer airport pick-up and see-off. One way to airport with a 4-seat car is about 18USD

Hanoi Backpacker Hostel has many young backpackers. If you look for a place with loud music, drinking and meeting, its your choice. Those who are just normal traveller will feel its so noisy. (10USD/dorm bed)
