Thanh Nien, the flagship publication of the Vietnam National Youth Federation, launched its first issue on January 3, 1986. Since then, Thanh Nien has become one of the most prestigious and influential newspapers in Vietnam.

The newspaper’s head office is located at 248 Cong Quynh Street, District 1, Ho Chi Minh City. In addition, the newspaper also has representative offices all over the country.

Thanh Nien is a daily newspaper with a total readership of over 2 million per week, making it one of the most widely circulated newspapers in Vietnam.
Additionally, Thanh Nien also offers online news editions in both Vietnamese and in English. In addition to fulfilling its primary function of reporting news, Thanh Nien has also been actively involved in social, cultural, and sports activities.

As far as social work is concerned, the newspaper is committed to enriching and enhancing individual and group development as well as relieving unfavorable economic and social situations. The newspaper’s social activities have so far received generous donations from its readers. With a budget of 1.7 to 2.2 billion VND per year set aside to cover the social work, Thanh Nien has been able to lend a helping hand to thousands of needy people including the handicapped and neglected children, disaster victims as well as the poor, the aged, and the sick.

Up to 543 cataract sufferers across the country have regained their eyesight in the past few years, thanks to a medical program sponsored by Thanh Nien. The newspaper also had seven primary schools in flood-prone Central provinces built, nine concrete bridges in the Mekong Delta provinces constructed, and seven houses for the war invalids and martyrs’ families set up.

Thanh Nien founded the Nguyen Thai Binh Scholarship Fund in 1990 to provide financial aid to distinguished students from less affluent families. The proceeds from Thanh Nien’s Duyen Dang Vietnam, one of the most anticipated musical events of the year in the country, are donated to the scholarship fund. The fund is further augmented by the generous offers of several benefactors. Until now, Thanh Nien has granted as many as 3,137 scholarships worth more than 3 billion VND.
In a bid to select, nurture, and prepare budding football players for the national team, Thanh Nien kicked off its Under-21 National Championship in 1997, a popular soccer competition held every year.

With more than one billion VND worth of prizes, Thanh Nien’s Under-21 National Championship is considered one of the highest prize tournaments in Vietnam.

For its outstanding achievements in the field of journalism and significant contributions to the welfare of society, Thanh Nien has been awarded several prestigious prizes, including the Second and Third Grade Labor Medals by the President in 1996 and 2002. Another Third Grade Labor Award was bestowed on Mr. Nguyen Cong Khe, chief editor and founder of Thanh Nien, in 2003.In addition, the newspaper was honored to receive a Certificate of Merit from the Ministry of Justice in 2000 for helping to publicize the legal system and popularize basic knowledge of the law among citizens.
