Harvesting seaweed

A shallow dive for seafood

Pham Thi Ly carries a bag of seaweed on her head. She collects around 30 kilograms a day and can sell it for about VND100, 000 (US$4.74).

A collection day starts at 3 p.m. and ends at sunset.

Urchins, sometimes called sea hedgehogs, are also found aplenty around the island's lava seams.

The harvesters count their money from a day of hard work.

Some seafood is weighed and traded on the beach at the end of the day.

Snails living at lava seams around the island are among the pickings.
