Tan Son Nhat opens new taxi zone in major improvement bid

TuoitreNews.vn - Passengers can now flag down a cab in a new taxi zone inaugurated Thursday at Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City, among several other changes introduced at the country’s busiest terminal. The new taxi zone is located in front of the domestic hall, serving passengers of both arrival and departure flights, an airport representative said on Thursday.

Vietjet flies to Yangon

Vietnam budget carrier Vietjet Air will launch flight service between Myanmar and Vietnam from October this year, according to an official announcement released by the airline. The route between Yangon and Ho Chi Minh will commence service on October 2 and will operate five (5) return flights per week, scheduled every Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday with an estimated flying time of around 2 hours and 15 minutes.

2 Vietnamese airports listed among Asia’s best airports

ThanhNienNews.vn - Two Vietnamese airports have been named among Top 30 Best Airports in Asia in a survey by the airport-review website www. sleepinginairports .net. The Da Nang International Airport (Da Nang) and the Noi Bai International Aiport (Hanoi) ranked 23rd and 28th, respectively, in the website’s 2015 Airport Survey.

Electric buses planned for ‘backpacker area’ in Ho Chi Minh City

TuoiTreNews.vn - One of the two routes of electric buses will run through an area dubbed the “backpacker area” in Ho Chi Minh City, the Department of Transport said in a plan submitted to local authorities for consideration. The area is located in Pham Ngu Lao Ward, often called the “backpacker area” because of the community of foreigners who stay there when they visit the city as tourists. In its plan, the department said every passenger would pay VND6,000-12,000 (US$0.27-0.54) per ticket for their trip on electric buses. Of the two routes, the first one would take in the “backpacker area,” Thai Binh Market, Cao Thang School, Cu Market, the Nguyen Hue pedestrian street, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, the Saigon Zoo and Botanical Garden, some trade centers and administrative agencies located on the main thoroughfares in the downtown area.   

Budget train tours to link Ho Chi Minh City with four south-central spots

TuoiTreNews.vn - A Ho Chi Minh City-based railway firm and travel association will team up with tourism authorities in four south-central Vietnamese provinces to offer low-cost train tours between the metropolis and these localities. Representatives of the Saigon Railway Co. and the Ho Chi Minh City Travel Association (HTA) will work with tourism officials from Binh Thuan, Khanh Hoa, Phu Yen and Binh Dinh to study the feasibility of such a plan.

Turkish Airlines to offer nonstop Vietnam service in mid-2016: CEO

Duty-free shopping to be allowed on Vietnam-bound flights in November

TuoiTreNews.vn - Passengers will be allowed to purchase duty-free goods onboard their international flights bound for Vietnam starting November, when a new tax-free shopping regulation takes effect. The new rule, approved by Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung and which will become effective on November 1, is applicable to domestic airlines, or those that are established and operate as per the Vietnamese law. A Vietjet attendant sells goods to a passenger on board a flight. As per the current rule, businesses are only allowed to sell duty-free goods at international airports in Vietnam and on board flights that depart from the country.

National Assembly ratifies construction of $16bn airport in southern Vietnam

TuoiTreNews.vn - A proposal to build a multibillion-dollar airport in southern Vietnam has finally received the greenlight from the law-making National Assembly, which passed a resolution for the project in a vote on Thursday. With a vote of 428-17 plus 16 abstentions, the National Assembly approved the development of Long Thanh International Airport in the eponymous district of Dong Nai Province, as they convened for the ninth session in Hanoi this morning. Seventeen out of the 461 lawmakers attending the session cast a negative vote against the plan, whereas 16 others refused to vote. The resolution determines that Long Thanh International Airport is a key such facility of the country, and requests that it meet the 4F standard of the International Civil Aviation Organization, and strives to become a regional hub for international air transit.

Vietnam to put largest air terminal into operation next week

After three years of construction, a $645.3 mln passenger terminal at the Noi Bai International Airport in Hanoi will be put into operation on December 25.   The 4-story Terminal 2, the largest of its kind in Vietnam so far, has been built since December 2011 by a workforce of 1,300 people with a total cost of ¥75.5 billion ($645.35 million). Of the investment, ¥59 billion ($504.27 million) is sourced from the Japanese official development assistance (ODA) and the remaining amount is the local counterpart capital. Workers are now completing the last work items of the facility so that it can be inaugurated in a week’s time. The terminal is 996 meters long and has a total gross floor area of over 139,000 square meters. The new facility can serve 10-15 million passengers per year.

Vietnam’s xe om service enters digital age with GrabBike app

(Thanh Nien News) The Malaysia-based company behind taxi-booking app GrabTaxi has launched a new service hosting motorbike drivers that you can call from your smartphone in Ho Chi Minh City.   GrabBike, which is available in the GrabTaxi app, allows users to order a  xe om  (motorbike taxi) via the popular iOS and Android app.   A GrabTaxi representative said Vietnam is the first market to roll out the GrabBike service. It will pilot the service in HCMC before extending it to other cities or countries.   Using GrabBike will be safer than hailing a traditional  xe om , as information about the driver, his photo and the bike’s license plate will be displayed.
