Vietnam, the nation of motorbikes, may soon see a car boom

ThanhNienNews.Com - The government on Tuesday submitted to lawmakers a plan to cut tariffs and luxury taxes that can send car prices down by 42 percent in 2019.  Under the plan,  prices for cars with small engines will fall significantly while those with engines of three liters and above will surge. 

Ho Chi Minh City says fifth metro line will cost $4.47 billion

ThanhNienNews.com - Ho Chi Minh City is seeking approval from the country's legislators for its plan to build the fifth metro line which it says will cost US$4.47 billion. Under the plan recently sent to the government, the city said foreign creditors have agreed to bankroll the line, which will run around 24 kilometers between the Can Giuoc Bus Terminal in Binh Chanh District and the Saigon Bridge.

Coca-Cola Vietnam finally pays tax after claiming losses for 20 years

TuoiTreNews.vn - The Vietnamese arm of U.S. soft drink giant Coca-Cola has paid its 2014 corporate tax, worth some US$20 million, for the first time in two decades due to losses, according to a report the firm submitted to Ho Chi Minh City authorities in May. The taxable profit of the company in 2014 was $16.6 million, more than double the purported $7 million in 2013, according to the report on the investment, business and tax obligations of Coca-Cola Vietnam, the content of which has just been made available.

The Da Nang International Airport (Da Nang) and the Noi Bai International Aiport (Hanoi) ranked 23rd and 28th, respectively, in the website’s 2015 Airport Survey.

Electric buses planned for ‘backpacker area’ in Ho Chi Minh City

TuoiTreNews.vn - One of the two routes of electric buses will run through an area dubbed the “backpacker area” in Ho Chi Minh City, the Department of Transport said in a plan submitted to local authorities for consideration. The area is located in Pham Ngu Lao Ward, often called the “backpacker area” because of the community of foreigners who stay there when they visit the city as tourists. In its plan, the department said every passenger would pay VND6,000-12,000 (US$0.27-0.54) per ticket for their trip on electric buses. Of the two routes, the first one would take in the “backpacker area,” Thai Binh Market, Cao Thang School, Cu Market, the Nguyen Hue pedestrian street, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, the Saigon Zoo and Botanical Garden, some trade centers and administrative agencies located on the main thoroughfares in the downtown area.   

Budget train tours to link Ho Chi Minh City with four south-central spots

TuoiTreNews.vn - A Ho Chi Minh City-based railway firm and travel association will team up with tourism authorities in four south-central Vietnamese provinces to offer low-cost train tours between the metropolis and these localities. Representatives of the Saigon Railway Co. and the Ho Chi Minh City Travel Association (HTA) will work with tourism officials from Binh Thuan, Khanh Hoa, Phu Yen and Binh Dinh to study the feasibility of such a plan.

Vietnam to slash visa fees in November to boost tourist arrivals

TuoiTreNews.vn - Vietnam will cut visa fees for several types of international passport holders and overseas Vietnamese next month, in the latest effort to boost the country’s foreign arrivals. Starting November 23, the single-entry visa will cost US$25 instead of the current $45, whereas the fee for multiple-entry visas with validity of less than three months will go down from $95 to $50, according to a circular by the Ministry of Finance. Foreigners will still have to pay $95 for the multi-entry visa with validity between three and six months, and $135 for between six months and a year. The fee for a visa valid for between one and two years is $145, and from two to five years, $155.

Northern Vietnam braces for tropical storm Mujigae

ThanhNienNews.com - Vietnam has been put on alert for the approaching tropical storm Mujigae, which is expected to strike its northern region next Monday. Mujigae, the 4th storm in Vietnam’s East Sea this year, is causing rough seas and rains and moving toward its northern region at a speed of 20 kph, according to the National Hydro-meteorological Forecasting Center . It was located some 850 km east of Vietnam’s Hoang Sa (Paracel) Island at 8 a.m. on Friday with wind speed of more than 75 kph.
