In photos: “underground” houses in Ho Chi Minh City

Tuoi Tre News

Several roads and alleys in Ho Chi Minh City have been raised by one to two meters as part of a city planning project, resulting in many private houses in suburban areas being literally turned into underground homes.

Such strange houses are easily spotted on newly-build roads such as Pham Van Dong in Thu Duc District and Pham Van Chi and Lo Gom in District 6.

In the dry season, it is stiflingly hot inside these homes; while dirty, smelly water often spills into local houses during the rainy season.

Some families have had to abandon their houses or put them up for sale at low prices because they could not stand the situation.

Those who can’t leave have to suffer hardships. Just to enter and exit their houses on a daily basis, they must creep, crawl, or use a ladder
