ThanhNienNews.com - Vietnam has been put on alert for the approaching tropical storm Mujigae, which is expected to strike its northern region next Monday.
Mujigae, the 4th storm in Vietnam’s East Sea this year, is causing rough seas and rains and moving toward its northern region at a speed of 20 kph, according to theNational Hydro-meteorological Forecasting Center.
It was located some 850 km east of Vietnam’s Hoang Sa (Paracel) Island at 8 a.m. on Friday with wind speed of more than 75 kph.
The tropical storm can become even stronger and reach 400km northeastern of Hoang Sa (Paracels) by 7 a.m. on Saturday, according to the forecasting center.
It will bring gales to coastal regions in northern provinces with extremely rough seas, it said.
A report on AccuWeather.com suggested that residents "should begin preparations for flooding rain, damaging winds and an inundating storm surge."
The previous storm, Vam Co, hit central Vietnam on September 14 with no human casualty.
Earlier in late July, a tropical depression triggered torrential rains in the northern province of Quang Ninh, killing at least 27 people.
Around 8-10 storms hit Vietnam every year but hydro-meteorologists forecasted a fewer number this year due to El Nino impacts.
